"India's transition to electric mobility is creating one of the country's most promising infrastructure investment opportunities. As millions of electric vehicles join Indian roads, the demand for accessible charging infrastructure is opening new avenues for businesses, investors, and entrepreneurs."
As India accelerates towards the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, electric mobility is emerging not only as an environmental transition but also as one of the country's most significant economic opportunities. India is working towards its ambitious national target of achieving a 30% electric vehicle (EV) penetration rate by 2030. in line with its Panchamrit commitments and pledge to reach Net Zero by 2070. According to the Parivahan Sewa portal, more than 10.1 million electric vehicles were registered across the country as of Aug 25, 2026.
To support this rapidly expanding EV ecosystem, the Government of India has undertaken significant initiatives to strengthen the national charging network. A major milestone in this effort was the launch of the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme in October 2024. Designed to accelerate the deployment of EV infrastructure across the country, the scheme will be implemented through March 2028, with a total outlay of ₹10,900 crore. Of this, ₹2,000 crore has been earmarked specifically for developing public charging infrastructure. Under this scheme, the government aims to establish 72,300 public charging stations nationwide, strategically aligned with India's diverse vehicle segments. This includes the installation of 48,400 charging points for electric two and three wheelers, 22,100 DC fast chargers for electric four-wheelers, and 1,800 high-capacity charging stations dedicated to electric buses.
To facilitate implementation, the PM E-DRIVE Scheme provides a structured subsidy framework that encourages investments across different categories of charging infrastructure. Charging stations established at government offices, public hospitals, and educational institutions (Category A) are eligible for 100% support for both upstream infrastructure and EV charging equipment, provided they remain accessible to the public. Installations at railway stations, municipal parking facilities, and toll plazas (Category B) receive 80% support for upstream infrastructure and 70% support for charging equipment. Commercial locations such as shopping malls, private highway stopovers and other business establishments (Category C) are eligible for 80% support for upstream infrastructure, while the charging equipment is funded by the developer. Battery Swapping Stations (Category D) are also eligible for 80% support for upstream infrastructure, further encouraging the expansion of battery-swapping services. This tiered incentive framework enables businesses to strategically plan investments while accelerating the development of a robust and accessible national EV charging network.
To further strengthen India's electric mobility ecosystem, the Government of India is developing the National Unified EV Charging App (Unified Bharat eCharge), envisioned as a "One Nation, One App" platform for seamless EV charging services. The initiative will enable users to locate, reserve, and pay for charging services through a single digital interface, while providing real-time information on charger availability, charging speed, tariffs, and station status. Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) as the nodal implementation agency, the platform will enhance interoperability among public and private charging networks, improving convenience and user confidence. By creating an integrated digital charging ecosystem, Unified Bharat eCharge is expected to accelerate EV adoption and support India's vision of smart, sustainable, and digitally connected mobility. Complementing infrastructure expansion with the right mix of charging technologies across diverse vehicle segments and locations will further strengthen India's clean mobility transition.
India's electric mobility journey is no longer only about manufacturing vehicles. It is equally important to build the infrastructure that powers them. Every charging station installed today strengthens the foundation of a cleaner, smarter, and more energy-secured India. carrying forward the collaborative spirit of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, and Sabka Prayas, which has underpinned the country's development approach. With visionary policy support, rapid technological innovation and growing private sector participation. the EV charging ecosystem represents one of the country's most promising infrastructure investment opportunities. Businesses, startups, and investors who participate in this transformation today will not only contribute to India's clean energy future but also become partners in realizing the national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. As the Prime Minister has consistently emphasized, "Reform, Perform and Transform," India's EV charging revolution reflects precisely that spirit, transforming mobility into an engine of sustainable economic growth.
