The Office of the Dean – Students’ Welfare, along with the NSS and NCC units of Pondicherry University, organised a Mega Tree Plantation Drive under the Vikshit Bharat Yuva Connect initiative and as part of the ’EkPedMaaKeNaam’ Campaign 2.0.

The event was inaugurated by Prof. P. Prakash Babu, Vice-Chancellor of Pondicherry University, who planted the first sapling and formally launched the programme. More than 65 varieties of fruit-bearing trees, including coconut, mango, chikku, jackfruit, guava, amla, and blueberry, were planted across the campus.

While addressing the gathering, Prof. P. Prakash Babu emphasised the environmental significance of tree plantation, outlining three major benefits. He highlighted that trees play a crucial role in improving air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, thereby reducing air pollution and creating a healthier breathing environment for students and staff. He further noted that trees contribute to temperature regulation, as their shade helps lower ambient heat in open spaces and around buildings, mitigating the “urban heat island” effect and reducing the reliance on artificial cooling systems. Additionally, he stressed the importance of biodiversity support, explaining that trees provide essential natural habitats for birds, insects, and small animals, thereby enriching and sustaining the local ecosystem.

The plantation drive witnessed enthusiastic participation from Deans, Heads of Departments, faculty members, research scholars, and students. Senior statutory officers who actively took part included Dr. Tharanivukkarasu, Director – Studies, Dr. Clement Sagayaradja Lourdes, Director – Culture, Dr. Rajneesh Bhutani, Registrar (i/c), Dr. Vijay Kumar, Librarian, Dr. SadanandaSwamy, Controller of Examinations, Dr. Y. Venkata Rao, Dean – Students’ Welfare, Prof. Sibi P.S., Deputy Dean – Students’ Welfare, Dr. Satheesh, NSS Coordinator, Dr. Humanyun, NCC Coordinator

Their active involvement, along with the committed participation of students and volunteers, ensured the grand success of the event.

The initiative aligns with the University’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainability, environmental consciousness, and community participation in creating a greener campus.
