An interactive session for students of the student exchange programme was conducted at the Pondicherry University on 11 August, 2025. Pondicherry University has entered into MOUs with several international partner universities, notably in Europe. A highlight of these MOUs is the student exchange programme which provides for studying one semester abroad at the host university and then transferring the credits earned to the home university. Such an exchange programme provides exposure to international practices in higher education, immersive cross-cultural experiences and, readiness and opportunities to forge an international career. Prof. Prakash Babu, Vice Chancellor, Pondicherry University welcomed the incoming international exchange students and addressed the outgoing students from Pondicherry University during the session.
The program, facilitated by Prof. Victor Anandkumar, Dean (International Relations), brought together students from prestigious European universities including University of Pavia (Italy), University of Tours (France), and Pantheon Sorbonne University (Paris). They are in Pondicherry University to pursue their exchange semester in the Departments of French, English, Political and International Studies and also the third year of the dual-degree programme – M.A. (SEAL) offered in collaboration with Pantheon Sorbonne University of Paris.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Prakash Babu highlighted Pondicherry's unique position as a living example of cross-cultural studies, noting how the university itself represents diversity with students from across India. "You will always be welcomed back as you are exchange students today and will be our alumni tomorrow," he told the international students. He also encouraged them to take active part in the different co- and extra- curricular activities on campus during their stay. Pondicherry University has exclusive hostels for international students and they include amenities for shared cooking and laundry, besides all the common facilities.
The incoming exchange students briefly shared their initial impressions and expectations. The cultural diversity seen on campus and the welcoming behaviour of the fellow students were highlighted by them. They expressed desire to know the different aspects of Indian culture, besides learning from the teachers in Pondicherry University.
Speaking to the outgoing students, the Vice Chancellor emphasized their role as national representatives during their exchange programs and encouraged them to make the best use of this rare opportunity. Six students from Management Studies, Law, and Karaikal campus are heading to universities in France and Germany to pursue an exchange semester. About four of them are provided with the Erasmus scholarships which covers their travel and living expenses during their semester abroad.
The Vice Chancellor also acknowledged the efforts of various department heads for their initiatives in promoting international exchange programs, which strengthen academic collaboration and cultural understanding.
Prof. Sharada, Deputy Dean (International Relations), delivered the vote of thanks, concluding the session with a group photograph commemorating the cross-cultural academic partnership.
The exchange program reflects Pondicherry University's commitment to internationalization and global academic cooperation.
