Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India, is a statutory body functioning under the aegis of Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. BIS operates various schemes such as Product Certification (ISI Mark), Management Systems Certification, Hallmarking of Gold and Silver Jewellery/Artefacts, and Laboratory Services for the benefit of industry, ultimately aiming at consumer protection.
BIS works closely with licensees to strengthen the quality ecosystem of the nation. To obtain a BIS licence, a manufacturer must have the requisite manufacturing infrastructure, appropriate process controls, quality control mechanisms, and testing facilities as prescribed in the relevant Indian Standard (IS). The product must conform to all requirements of the IS.
The Bureau grants licences after a comprehensive assessment of the manufacturing premises, including infrastructure, process controls, quality control systems, and testing capabilities. Conformity of the product is further established through independent third-party testing, in-house testing, or a combination of both.
