JIPMER has started free registration and on-site printing of the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) Card for the public. The ABHA card is a unique 14-digit interoperable digital health ID that allows citizens to link and manage their medical records digitally, improving patient experience and streamlining access to healthcare services.
The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) is a flagship initiative of the Government of India aimed at creating a comprehensive digital health ecosystem. It provides every citizen with a unique Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) ID, enabling secure storage, linkage, and sharing of health records across healthcare providers nationwide. The mission seeks to enhance accessibility, efficiency, and continuity of healthcare services for all Indians.
Key benefits of ABHA include having a single unique digital health ID for every citizen, secure digital storage of medical records such as prescriptions, test results and reports, convenient sharing of health information with hospitals and doctors through consent-based access, improved continuity of care by reducing repeated investigations, access to health services across India within the ABDM network, a free, paperless and patient-friendly process, and a strong foundation for availing future digital health services and schemes.
In addition, citizens who are beneficiaries of the government health-coverage scheme Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) will find the ABHA platform and Card particularly valuable. PM-JAY is the world’s largest health assurance scheme fully financed by the government, providing cover of ₹5 lakh (per family per year) for secondary and tertiary hospitalization care for eligible families. Under PM-JAY, treatment is cashless and paperless at empanelled hospitals, and pre-existing conditions are covered from day one.
The integration of ABHA and PM-JAY helps beneficiaries by enabling better coordination of care: their digital health ID and records via ABHA may support smoother admissions, avoid duplication of diagnostics, and help in continuity across providers and hospitals. It supports the overarching objective of the Ayushman Bharat initiative to deliver Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by leveraging both digital infrastructure and financial protection schemes.
Encouraging the public to make use of this facility to enhance their healthcare access through both ABHA and PM-JAY, Dr. Vir Singh Negi, Director, JIPMER, stated, “ABHA is a transformative step towards building a robust digital health infrastructure across the nation. It aligns with the vision of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to ensure equitable, efficient, and technology-enabled healthcare delivery for every citizen. We urge the public to actively utilize this service and be part of India’s digital health revolution.”
To avail this service, members of the public are requested to bring their Aadhaar card along with the mobile number linked to Aadhaar for OTP verification, following which, upon successful authentication, the ABHA Card will be generated, printed, and issued immediately on-site.
Registration Counters within JIPMER are operational at Screening OPD, RCC Block, Women & Children’s Hospital (WCH) Block, Institute Block and Super Speciality Block (SSB). These counters are already functional and operate during regular office hours on all working days.
