The Department of Chemistry, Lady Doak College, Madurai, in collaboration with VOICE Trust, Madurai, jointly observed World Food Day and National Food Day on October 23, 2025, at Appar Higher Secondary School, Karuppayurani.
The programme highlighted the significance of these observances in promoting UN - SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being and SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production, emphasizing food safety, nutrition, and sustainable food practices.
The event was presided by the chief guests Dr. R. Karnan, State President, Tamil Nadu Citizen Consumer Protection Centre, and Mr. S. Chandramohan, Food Safety Officer (FSO), Madurai East Block, Madurai, and addressed the gathering about the importance of food safety and consumer awareness. Following the inaugural session, an exhibition under the theme Lab to Land on “Consumer Awareness Towards Food Safety and Standards” was inaugurated.
The exhibition featured informative displays and practical demonstrations on topics such as the nutritive value of food products, natural and artificial food additives, food adulteration, and the health impacts of pesticide residues by the students of III B.Sc., Chemistry as part of their community engagement programme. These exhibits and chemical tests effectively created awareness among students about safe food practices.
Nearly 1,200 school students benefited from the programme, gaining valuable insights into the significance of food quality and safety. The programme was jointly coordinated by Mr. T. Murugesan, Director, Voice Trust, Madurai and Dr. V. Sridevi, Head, Department of Chemistry, Dr. M. Anusha Rani and Dr. P. Silviya Reeta, Course Facilitators, Lady Doak College, Madurai.
