Lady Doak College (LDC), a pioneering institute in Women’s Education, focused on offering skill-based and job-oriented niche courses in Madurai, has been officially recognized as the Open Source Geospatial Knowledge Centre of the FOSSEE GIS project, IIT Bombay.
This honour has been bestowed based on LDC’s commitment to promoting Open Source Geospatial initiatives. This is in continuation of the Best College Award conferred to LDC in 2024 as a part of the National Geospatial Awards 2024 (Edition 01) for its committed efforts in mapping resources on its campus using Open Source tools and AI technology. With this recognition, LDC shall have a chance to onboard its students to the coded National Geospatial Internship with the problem statements obtained from potential government agencies and industry, in addition to conducting awareness sessions, FDPs, Summer/Winter Schools, Open Source Geospatial Product development, etc.
During a formal discussion with Mr. Praveen Kumar, IAS, District Collector, Madurai, on 3rd November 2025, the certificate of recognition of the IIT Bombay FOSSEE’s Open Source Geospatial Knowledge Centre was officially handed over to Dr. R. Beulah Jeyashree, Principal and Secretary, Lady Doak College, Madurai, in the presence of Mr. Mohamed Kasim Khan, National Coordinator & Senior Research Scientist - FOSSEE GIS, IIT Bombay, and Dr. Padmaja, Faculty Coordinator for Open Source Geospatial Knowledge Centre for Madurai district and Mrs. Lakshmi, GIS expert, Lady Doak College.
FOSSEE GIS (NMEICT) provides unrestricted access to institutions, with a plethora of opportunities with multiple entry/ exit options in the internship (for eligible candidates), open source geospatial curriculum design, faculty development, technical support in setting up an Open Source GIS lab, etc. FOSSEE GIS’s Open Source Geospatial Knowledge Centre (Geospatial) is a unique honour conferred on potential UGC/AICTE recognized institutions to spread awareness on Open Source Geospatial tools, curriculum inclusion, National Geospatial Internship, Geospatial Research Fellowship, promoting indigenous Indian technologies like NavIC, etc. in adherence to the National Geospatial Policy 2022, and Indian Space Policy 2023.
