The Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), Andaman and Nicobar Regional Centre, inaugurated a one-week compulsory training course for Indian Forest Service (IFS) officers on “Coastal and Marine Biodiversity of Island Ecosystem” today at Minni Bay, Sri Vijaya Puram. The programme is being conducted from 08 – 12 December 2025.
Shri Balachandran, IAS (Retd.), Former Secretary to the Government of India, graced the inaugural ceremony as the Chief Guest.
In his address, Shri Balachandran highlighted the critical importance of coastal and marine ecosystems in ensuring a healthy environment. Stressing that the Andaman and Nicobar Islands form one of the world’s prominent biodiversity hotspots, he underscored the responsibility of Forest Service officers not only as protectors of forests but also as custodians of India’s rich marine biodiversity.
He noted that the marine ecosystem is fundamentally different from the terrestrial environment, requiring specialised knowledge, scientific understanding, and coordinated conservation efforts. He urged officials from various departments to work together and support the protection of marine ecosystems through enlightened policies and effective implementation of Central and State Government Acts.
Earlier, Dr. Sivaperuman, Additional Director, ZSI, delivered the welcome address and presented an overview of the objectives, structure, and expected outcomes of the one-week training programme.
Delivering the Special Address, Dr. Dinesh Kannan, IFS, Chief Conservator of Forests, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, briefed the participants on the unique flora and fauna of the islands, with special emphasis on the coastal and marine biodiversity of the region.
A total of 21 Forest Officials from various States across the country are participating in the training programme, which also includes field visits to ecologically significant sites in the Andaman Islands.
