On December 03, 2025, the World Disability Day observance was held at J.X. Miller Hall, Lady Doak College, under the theme “Role of Youth in Advancing Social Inclusion of Persons with Disability.” The event comprised two insightful sessions aimed at empowering students to understand, support, and include persons with disabilities. It was organised by Negizhchi – MSW Students’ Forum and the Department of Social Sciences, in collaboration with Part V NSS Units 48, 49 & 50 for the forenoon session (10:00 AM – 12:00 PM), and Part V NSS Units 45, 46 & 47 for the afternoon session (2:00 PM – 4:00 PM).
The forenoon session featured Ms. Amudha Shanthi, who shared her journey of overcoming disability and founding Thiyagam Trust to empower women with disabilities. She encouraged students to interact with persons with disabilities, understand their daily challenges, and spread awareness about assistive tools. Ms.Ritama David further highlighted the needs and abilities of otherwise‑abled individuals, shared stories of special needs students, and emphasised respectful language and inclusivity.
The afternoon session was led by Dr. Jeyapal Kirubakaran, who explained intellectual disability, its causes, identification signs, and therapeutic needs. He stressed the emotional struggles faced by families and the importance of youth fostering acceptance. Performances by Bethshan School students, a thematic video, and the documentary Amidham offered meaningful insights into the lives and strengths of children with special needs.
Overall, the sessions collectively deepened students’ understanding of disability inclusion and strengthened their commitment to fostering an equitable and supportive environment, underscoring the essential role of youth in upholding the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.
