NIT Trichy Hosts Workshop on Rehabilitation Engineering

The Department of Instrumentation and Control Engineering (ICE), National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli, inaugurated the GIAN-sponsored one-week workshop titled “Introduction to Human–Machine Interfaces and its Applications in Rehabilitation Engineering” on 02 February 2026. The programme is supported by the Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN), Ministry of Education, Government of India.


The workshop was formally inaugurated by Dr. G. Aghila, Director, NIT  Tiruchirappalli, who highlighted the role of healthcare technology, artificial intelligence, and human–machine interfaces in translating research into impactful clinical solutions. The inaugural address was delivered by Dr. N. Sivakumaran, Professor, Department of Instrumentation and Control Engineering, who emphasized the role of translational research in rehabilitation engineering. He highlighted the need of bridging the gaps between research scientist and clinicians through close collaboration. The Head of the Department, ICE, Professor Dr. K. Srinivasan, emphasized the department’s strong interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach in advancing biomedical and rehabilitation research.


The Chief Guest, Dr. Ramana Vinjamuri, Associate Professor of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), USA, sharing advanced expertise in human–machine interface systems and rehabilitation-oriented neurotechnologies. Dr. Senthilkumar Nallusamy, a Chief Interventional Cardiologist, Rana Hospital, Tiruchirappalli, who is the Guest of Honour,  discussed both preventive cardiology and the central role of human–machine interaction in modern cardiac care. He emphasized disciplined lifestyle practices and outlined the “90 rule” as practical guidance for long-term heart health.
