Scientific temper must be deeply ingrained among people for society to achieve sustainable progress, emphasised Dr. M. Abdul Kadir, former Principal of Wakf Board College and President of the Madurai chapter of the Breakthrough Science Society.

Delivering a talk in the “Ariviyal Velli” (Science Friday) programme broadcast by All India Radio, Madurai, he elaborated on the intrinsic link between scientific thinking and social development.

Dr. Kadir observed that the advancement of human civilisation is closely tied to the way societies think. Scientific temper, he explained, is not merely about technological knowledge but represents a rational approach to life grounded in evidence and critical inquiry.

He highlighted key components of a scientific mindset, including curiosity, evidence-based reasoning, the ability to question, and the willingness to revise opinions in the light of new information. Such an approach, he noted, has contributed significantly to progress across sectors ranging from agriculture to medicine.

Citing historical examples, he pointed out that scientific thinking played a crucial role during the European Renaissance as well as India’s Green Revolution. In contrast, societies trapped in superstition have often lagged behind in development, he said.

He further stressed that science and superstition operate in opposing directions, warning that beliefs lacking evidence can be detrimental to society. The adoption of scientific approaches in fields such as healthcare, technology, education, and governance has led to substantial improvements in quality of life, he added.

Addressing contemporary challenges, Dr. Kadir underscored the importance of scientific thinking in tackling global issues such as climate change. At the same time, he called for ethical responsibility to accompany scientific advancement.

He also advocated reforms in the education system, particularly for youth, to foster questioning ability and a spirit of inquiry. Investment in science education, he said, is an investment in the future of society.

Concluding his address, he remarked that scientific temper forms the foundation of a just, progressive, and sustainable society, and that the promotion of rational thinking would ensure social harmony, equality, and long-term development.
