The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Coimbatore Branch Office, successfully organized a two-day Capsule Course on IS 210:2009 – Grey Iron Castings – Specification on 24th & 25th June 2026 for Quality control personnel of Grey Iron Castings Manufacturers.
The programme was conducted with the objective of enhancing awareness and technical understanding of the requirements of IS 210:2009, conformity assessment procedures, and testing methodologies. The first day of the programme was held at the Indian Institute of Foundrymen (IIF), Coimbatore, while the second day was a laboratory Visit to SITARC, Coimbatore.
In his special address, Shri Ramesh K, Scientist-E/Director & Head, BIS Coimbatore, emphasized the importance of the capsule course in improving product quality and reducing failure rates in Grey iron castings. He encouraged participants to apply the learnings towards effective failure analysis and resolution of technical issues. He also urged them to create awareness among non-licensee manufacturers about the benefits of BIS certification and motivate eligible units to obtain BIS licences under IS 210:2009.
An overview of BIS and its activities was presented by Smt Divya S, Scientist-D/Joint Director, BIS Coimbatore. Technical sessions on IS 210:2009, including detailed discussions on specification requirements and test methods, were delivered by Shri Vinith Kumar G, Scientist-E/ Director, BIS Coimbatore. Participants were also sensitized on procedures relating to grant, inclusion, renewal and operation of BIS licences by Shri Gautam Chand Soni, Scientist-C/ Deputy Director, BIS Coimbatore.
A dedicated session on the features and functionalities of the e-BIS portal was conducted by Shri Remyth Suresh M, Scientist-D/ Joint Director, BIS Coimbatore, enabling participants to familiarize themselves with digital certification processes. Discussions were also held on product manuals, Scheme of Inspection and Testing (SIT), record maintenance and failure analysis.
The Second day features practical training at SITARC, Coimbatore, covering testing methods, sample preparation and hands-on demonstrations of grey cast ton testing as per IS 210: 2009. The programme concluded with an open-house discussion, feedback session and distribution of certificates. The course witnessed active participation from foundries of Coimbatore region and forms part of BIS's continued efforts to promote quality culture and standardization in industry
