A workshop on export promotion for food and agricultural products was conducted today at a private hall in Dindigul under the joint initiative of the Department of Agriculture and the Tamil Nadu Food Processing and Agri Export Promotion Corporation (TNAPEx). The programme was inaugurated by the District Collector of Dindigul, Durga Moorthy.

Addressing the gathering, the Collector stated that the Tamil Nadu Government, under the leadership of the Chief Minister, has been implementing several farmer-centric schemes to improve agricultural productivity and farmers' livelihoods.

She highlighted that the State Government is encouraging farmers to convert their produce into value-added products and market them effectively to secure better returns. Various initiatives are being undertaken to help farmers adopt modern technologies and gain knowledge through workshops and seminars conducted by experts in the field.

The workshop was organised to benefit farmers, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), food-processing entrepreneurs and exporters from across Dindigul district. The Collector noted that while agriculture remains the backbone of the district, farmers often face challenges in obtaining fair prices for their produce and ensuring stable income. Since many agricultural commodities are perishable, she urged farmers to focus on quality production, proper marketing, value addition and export opportunities to enhance their livelihoods.

She advised farmers to diversify crops based on soil conditions, climatic factors and water availability rather than depending on a single crop. Farmers from regions such as Natham, Sanarpatti, Sirumalai and Kodaikanal were encouraged to improve the value and marketability of their agricultural products through processing and branding.

The Collector also explained the role of Tamil Nadu Food Processing and Agri Export Promotion Corporation in promoting agri-business and supporting farmers. TNAPEx conducts export-oriented training programmes across districts, creating awareness on licensing, packaging, documentation and export procedures in coordination with the Agriculture Department.

The corporation also facilitates the establishment of food-processing units, mega food parks and warehouses, while providing guidance on global market trends and export opportunities. Farmers and entrepreneurs requiring training and support were encouraged to approach TNAPEx and make use of its services.

The workshop brought together farmers, exporters, food-processing entrepreneurs and other stakeholders from the food-processing sector, providing a common platform to discuss strategies for strengthening agricultural exports from the region.

Among those present were Joint Director of Agriculture Govindarasu, Deputy Director of Horticulture Gayathri, Personal Assistant (Agriculture) to the Collector Nagendran, Export Consultant Dr. Oliyarasan, along with farmers, FPO representatives, food-processing entrepreneurs and exporters.
