The South Indian Film Journalists' Union has expressed profound grief over the passing of legendary filmmaker K. Bhagyaraj, describing his death as an irreparable loss to the Tamil film industry. Bhagyaraj, one of Tamil cinema's most celebrated screenwriters, passed away at the age of 73 following a heart attack.
In its condolence message, the Union hailed Bhagyaraj as the "King of Screenplay" and recalled his remarkable contributions as a director, actor, producer, distributor, writer, editor, music composer, and President of the South Indian Film Writers' Association.
The statement also highlighted that Bhagyaraj enjoyed the admiration and goodwill of former Tamil Nadu Chief Ministers M. Karunanidhi, M.G. Ramachandran (MGR), and J. Jayalalithaa. It further noted his role in introducing and mentoring several acclaimed filmmakers, including R. Pandiarajan, Parthiban, V. Sekar, G.M. Kumar, Livingston, and Kathir, who went on to make significant contributions to Tamil cinema.
The Union extended its heartfelt condolences to Poornima Bhagyaraj, their son Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, their daughter, and the bereaved family members.
Paying tribute to the veteran filmmaker, the South Indian Film Journalists' Union stated that Bhagyaraj's extraordinary body of work and lasting contributions to Tamil cinema will continue to inspire generations of filmmakers and movie lovers.
