A traditional fishing festival was held at Thattatti Periya Kanmai near Tiruppathur in Sivaganga district, drawing hundreds of participants from nearby towns and villages.

According to local residents, fish fingerlings had been released into the large irrigation tank nearly ten years ago and had since grown in large numbers. The villagers therefore decided to organize a community fishing festival using the traditional “Ootha Kuthuthal” method of fishing.

A participation fee of ₹500 per fishing spot (Ootha) was collected, and tokens were issued to around 800 participants. The event began after auction organizers made an official announcement from the tank bund, following which participants entered the water and started fishing.

Fishermen caught a variety of native fish species, including Catla, Rohu, Viral, and Gowthi fish. Many participants reportedly caught between 10 and 20 kilograms of fish, leading to a festive atmosphere and widespread excitement.

People from Tiruppathur, Dindigul, Sivaganga, Karaikudi, and several surrounding villages took part in the event.

After nearly two hours of organized fishing, local villagers continued catching fish using traditional equipment such as nets, baskets, and hand-held fishing tools before taking their catch home.

The annual-style community event not only provided recreation and a source of fresh fish but also served as a social gathering that brought together residents from various parts of the region.
