Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India, organized a ‘Manak Manthan’ on Indian Standard IS 4985 – “Unplasticized PVC Pipes for Potable Water Supplies”, at the Training Hall of the BIS Southern Regional Office, CIT Campus, Taramani, Chennai, on 22 July 2026.
The programme was organized to create awareness among stakeholders, including manufacturers, testing laboratories, industry associations, MSMEs, consumers and other interested parties, regarding the provisions of “Unplasticized PVC Pipes for Potable Water Supplies — Specification (Fourth Revision) (Second Amendment to IS 4985:2021)” and to obtain valuable feedback and inputs from stakeholders on the relevant Indian Standard. The session also provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss the requirements and specifications applicable to unplasticized PVC pipes used for potable water supplies and to share their views on matters relating to quality and conformity to Indian Standards.
Shri Ajay Chandel, Scientist–C / Deputy Director, Bureau of Indian Standards, Chennai Branch Office, delivered the Welcome Address and outlined the objectives of the programme. He also conducted a detailed discussion on “Unplasticized PVC Pipes for Potable Water Supplies (IS 4985)”, covering the relevant provisions and requirements of the Indian Standard and highlighting the importance of adherence to specified quality requirements for ensuring reliable and safe potable water supply systems.
The programme concluded with an interactive Open House, providing an opportunity for participants to interact with BIS officials, clarify their queries and share their views on the subject. The programme reaffirmed BIS Chennai’s commitment towards promoting awareness on Indian Standards, encouraging quality-conscious practices and strengthening stakeholder engagement on matters related to standardization and consumer safety.
Consumers and industry stakeholders were also advised to verify the authenticity of ISI Mark, Hallmark and CRS registrations through the BIS Care App, BIS portal or by scanning QR codes, wherever applicable.
