The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Coimbatore Branch Office, conducted an Enforcement Search and Seizure operation at M/s Ponmani Industries, 421/B & 421/2, CODISSIA Road, Thaneerpandhal Post, Peelamedu, Coimbatore – 641004, Tamil Nadu, on 30 July 2026, based on credible information regarding suspected violations of the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016.
The enforcement operation was carried out by a team of BIS officials comprising Shri Vinith Kumar G, Scientist-E/Director and Shri Gautam Chand Soni, Sc-C/Deputy Director. During the search conducted under the provisions of Section 28 of the BIS Act, 2016, the unit was found to be manufacturing, storing and selling pressure cookers bearing the Standard Mark (ISI Mark) without holding a valid BIS licence, amounting to misuse of the BIS Standard Mark.
During the course of the operation, approximately 250 pressure cookers, having an estimated value of ₹4.5 lakh, were seized by the BIS team for violation of the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016
Shri Ramesh K, Director & Head, Coimbatore Branch Office, stated that appropriate action would be initiated by the Bureau of Indian Standards, Coimbatore Branch Office, against the offenders under the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016. He further informed that, as per Section 28 of the BIS Act, 2016, the offence is punishable, for the first contravention, with imprisonment for a term which may extend up to two years, or with a fine not less than ₹2,00,000, which may extend up to ten times the value of the goods or articles manufactured, sold, offered for sale, or marked with the Standard Mark, or with both.
Pressure cookers are essential household products where compliance with safety requirements is critical. The use of uncertified or sub-standard pressure cookers may pose serious risks to consumer safety. BIS therefore urges consumers to purchase only Pressure cookers bearing the genuine ISI Mark along with the applicable Indian Standard number and a valid CM/L licence number, which can be verified using the BIS CARE App.
Manufacturers and suppliers are expected to ensure strict compliance with the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016, and the applicable Quality Control Orders. Non-compliance with mandatory BIS certification not only compromises consumer safety but also attracts penal action under the law.
