On the occasion of India’s 80th Independence Day, Dr. Mohit Bhandari and Team Mohak achieved a landmark milestone by completing 51 robotic bariatric and metabolic surgeries in just 14 hours on August 15. The initiative brought together six robotic systems, one designated console surgeon and one highly coordinated Indian clinical team, with 30 men and 21 women, aged 21 to 77 years, and an average body weight of approximately 122 kg. With more than 40,000 bariatric surgeries performed by Dr. Mohit Bhandari, the achievement highlights extensive clinical expertise, advanced technology and large-scale surgical coordination.
The milestone was conducted under external observation, with documentation submitted to the Guinness World Records and the World Book of Records for formal recognition. The initiative also highlighted “Surgical Swaraj”, demonstrating India’s growing capability in indigenous surgical robotics and advanced healthcare delivery. The use of indigenous technology in a high-volume robotic bariatric programme reflects the potential to expand access to sophisticated surgical care beyond traditional metropolitan centres while supporting India’s vision of strengthening domestic medical technology and innovation.
