84% Indians Show Growing Interest in Cultural Travel, Says Skyscanner

Leading global travel app Skyscanner has launched The India Culture Travel Index, revealing that 84% of Indian travellers say their interest in cultural travel within India has grown in recent years. The report highlights a shift from traditional sightseeing towards immersive experiences centred on local heritage, traditions, cuisine, festivals and communities.


According to the report, heritage remains the biggest motivator for culture-led travel, with 47% of travellers planning trips around historical sites. Kerala, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand rank among India's top cultural destinations. The study also found that 42% of travellers are inspired by social media and YouTube, while 41% are influenced by food, craft and heritage trails. Additionally, 46% have travelled abroad for cultural events, 43% aspire to do so, and 25% are exploring Tier 2 and Tier 3 towns for authentic cultural experiences.


The report also identifies festival tourism as a major travel trend, with 72% of Indian travellers willing to plan holidays specifically around cultural or religious festivals. Durga Puja (58%) emerged as the most popular festival for travel, followed by Ganesh Chaturthi (52%) and Navratri Garba (47%), reflecting the growing appeal of once-in-a-year cultural experiences.
