Ramraj Cotton marked this year’s Onam celebrations with a record-setting creation, making its way into the Asia Book of Records for the ‘Largest Pookkalam Display Created Using Dhotis’.
The textile brand created a spectacular 30-ft-diameter Mundukalam using around 3,000 dhotis at Forum Mall, Kochi. The initiative presented the traditional dhoti in an innovative form while celebrating the cultural significance of Onam.
The Asia Book of Records recognition was presented by Sanjay Bhola, Adjudicator, Asia Book of Records, to The Culturepreneur K.R. Nagarajan, Founder & Chairman, Ramraj Cotton, and B.R. Arun Eshwar, Managing Director, Ramraj Cotton.
The large-scale installation reflected Ramraj Cotton’s association with Indian textile traditions and its efforts to showcase them through contemporary expressions. The use of thousands of dhotis to create the Mundukalam brought together two important elements of Kerala’s cultural and festive identity.
Speaking on the occasion, The Culturepreneur, K.R. Nagarajan, Founder & Chairman, Ramraj Cotton, said the dhoti represented more than just a garment and was an integral part of the cultural fabric and a tradition passed down through generations.
He said the company had wanted to celebrate this connection in a manner that people could experience and remember. The Mundukalam, created with nearly 3,000 dhotis, brought together the spirit of Onam and the legacy of the dhoti.
Nagarajan said the Asia Book of Records recognition was a matter of pride for the brand, while the larger objective was to celebrate traditions in a manner that felt fresh and relevant.
