The scheme is aimed at honouring motherhood and babies born at government hospitals. Children born at government hospitals from June 22, 2026, will be eligible to benefit under the scheme.
Accordingly, Minister for Social Welfare and Women’s Rights K. Jagadeeswari yesterday inaugurated the distribution of gold rings under the ‘Thaimaman Thanga Modhiram’ scheme at the Virudhunagar Government Medical College Hospital and placed the gold rings on the babies. On the first day, rings were distributed to 250 babies.
District Collector Sharanya Ari, IAS, Virudhunagar MLA P. Selvam and others participated in the event.
Minister K. Jagadeeswari said the scheme was being implemented to reflect the traditional practice of the maternal uncle presenting gifts to a newborn. Through the scheme, steps have been taken to encourage childbirths at government hospitals, further strengthen government services for maternal and child welfare, and enhance public confidence in government hospitals.
