The new chief secretary was appointed at the request of the Manipur government following the approvals by the appointments committee of the cabinet.

Till now 54 deaths are registered following the violent clashes that erupted in the northeastern state after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' organised in the 10 hill districts on 3 May, a  protest against the Meitei community demanding scheduled tribe (ST) status.

The violence has triggered tension in the state. The government is making all possible attempts to rescue the violence-hit citizens and has so far moved 23,000 victims to military garrisons.
