Bureau of Indian Standards, the National Standards Body of India is a statutory body functioning under the aegis of Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. It operates various schemes like Product Certification (ISI mark), Management Systems Certification, Hall Marking of Gold and Silver Jewellery/Artefacts and Laboratory Services for the benefit of the industry and in turn aiming at consumer protection.
Bureau of Indian Standards, Southern Regional Office (SRO) was originally established at Satya Murthy Bhavan, G. P. Road, Chennai in January 1969. BIS-SRO was later shifted to its own building presently situated at CIT Campus, IV Cross Road, Taramani, Chennai in the year 1976. The building for Southern Regional Office and Laboratory Complex was inaugurated in July 1976 by Mr. T. A. Pai, Union Minister of Industry and Civil Supplies, at Madras on 12 July 1976 in the presence of Mr. B. S. Krishnamachary, DG, ISI.
After almost 46 years, as per the direction of Mr. Pramod Kumar Tiwari, IAS., Director General, BIS, the Southern Regional Office Building was taken up for renovation under the headship of Mr. USP Yadav, Scientist-F & Deputy Director General (Southern Region). The newly renovated building is being renovated keeping in mind all modern amenities for better working atmosphere, modern Training/Conference rooms. The building will also reflect different cultures/traditions of Southern States and is in the final Stage of completion.
Pramod Kumar Tiwari, IAS., Director General, BIS unveiled the newly renovated building on yesterday 01 June 2023 and also awarded the Licence for Quality Management Systems (QMS), Environment Management Systems (EMS) & Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS) Certification to Kudankulam – Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (Unit I & II ), Tirunelveli District. Shri T Prem Kumar,Site Director & Shri L Richard, Training Superintendent & Management Representative -Integrated Management System from Kudankulam – Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited received the Licence from DG BIS. Shri USP Yadav, Scientist-F & Deputy Director General (Southern Region) and Head of Branch offices of BIS Southern Region were Present during the Licence awarding Ceremony.
