Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Center (MMHRC) recently organized an Oncology Champions Meet for the cancer survivors, who have been treated at MMHRC. Around 75 Cancer survivors with their families participated in the event. Survivors who spoke at the event retold their stories of how they went through the highs and lows of their fight with cancer and how it is satisfying to be up here to tell their story, to inspire and support the millions who are currently facing the same situation.

During the event, “The Meenakshi HOPE fund” intended for those with financial difficulties for oncological treatment was launched by Dr. S. Gurushankar, Chairman, MMHRC. Dr. Krishnakumar Rathnam, Senior Consultant and HOD, Department of Medical Oncology made the first donation of Rs 1 lakh for the HOPE Cancer fund and handed over the cheque to Dr. S. Gurushankar, Chairman, MMHRC.

Dr. S. Gurushankar, Chairman, MMHRC, welcomed the champions for the gathering and said, “Every cancer survivor has a unique tale to tell. Some receive an early diagnosis and have no memory of their disease. Others who had survived cancer were in their twenties or teens. Their lives had been greatly impacted by cancer. However, each cancer survivor’s narrative was unique, they all had one thing in common, that they were all cancer survivors - CHAMPIONS who won the war of cancer. Understanding their tales could help other cancer survivors’ deal with similar difficulties and win this battle successfully.”

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Krishnakumar Rathnam, Senior Consultant and HOD, Department of Medical Oncology said, “MMHRC is one of the few comprehensive cancer centres offering treatment at par with many regional institutes delivering state of art protocol driven chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapy and the first centre in South Tamil Nadu to introduce bone marrow transplantation program since 2014; curing many cancer patients at affordable cost. Most cancer therapy is being delivered as “day-care” without need for admission thereby reducing cost for patients.”

The event was presided over by Dr.Krishnakumar Rathnam, Senior Consultant and HOD, Department of Medical Oncology and was felicitated by Dr. Ramesh Ardhanari, Medical Director & Senior Consultant, Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, Dr. B.Kannan, Medical Administrator, Dr. Vijaya Bhaskar ,Senior Consultant & HOD, Department of Surgical Oncology, Dr. K. S. Kirushna Kumar, Senior Consultant & HOD, Department of Radiation Oncology.  Dr. S. Gurushankar, Chairman, MMHRC, was the chief guest of the event.
