An awareness programme on Swachhata Hi Seva Movement was held today at Palayamkottai Sarah Tucker Girls Higher Secondary School on behalf of Tirunelveli Central Bureau of Communication,  under Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India.

The event was presided over by Mrs. Selvalatha Ramona, Headmistress of the school.

Mr. Velmurugan, Field Publicity Assistant of Central Bureau of Communication attended as a special guest and spoke. He said that rural Sanitation was among Gandhiji's 18 aspects of development in independent India.  Gandhiji mentioned that cleanliness starts from the toilet of the house. Gandhiji had pointed out that anything that is not in its proper place is garbage.  Velmurugan  remembered Gandhiji’s struggles and sacrifices. A clean India was Gandhiji's dream. So serving for cleanliness is equal to fulfilling his dream and cleanliness work is the real service work.

He also said that the Swachhata Hi Seva Movement is being celebrated from September 15 to October 2 on behalf of the Central Government and this event is being held as a part of it.

Around 4000 students, including teachers, took the pledge to recite the Swachhata Hi Seva Pledge during the programme. Pamphlets on Clean India were distributed to the students. Cleaning work was carried out in the school by the students of the National Service Scheme.
