To end an era of 2G, 3G services – Requested by Reliance Jio

Business MInutes

Reliance Jio urges government to Frame Policy to Shut Down 2G and 3G network services in India as the 5G adoption hasn’t really hit its peak. Vodafone-Idea (Vi) also supports the migration effort, citing the digital divide and the need for government intervention. Jio suggests a policy and glide path to migrate customers to 4G and 5G which will boost development of 5G use cases and also prevent the unnecessary network costs.

Interestingly, Jio doesn’t have 2G services whereas both Airtel and Vodafone-Idea (Vi) do have. Vi also wants government to make efforts to ensure migration of 2G users to 5G. One of the reasons that Vi gives us is that users are using older technology i.e., 2G and not able to access the new generation technology despite the availability of connectivity and also they are unable to switch to smartphones as they are an expensive proposition for them, as per the reports.
