Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Chennai Branch Office organized BIS - Manak Manthan Programme on "Work Chairs-Specifications - IS 17631:2022 & General Purpose Chairs and Stools - IS 17632:2022” at Hotel Rajpark, Chennai on 22 Feb 2024.

Mr. D Jeevandam,Scientist-D while explaining the Programme Objectives mentioned BIS is organizing series of discussion-programmes titled “Manak Manthan” for the benefit of industry which is scheduled on every month, and is envisaged to launch new standards and share important revisions / amendments and wide circulation drafts to local manufacturers, Industrial and Trade Bodies, Chambers of Commerce, Industry Associations, PSU’s or organizations who use such products, Government departments, Regulatory bodies, Laboratories, Civil society groups and Academia.

He also added that Work chairs, also commonly referred to as office chairs, serve as essential components in professional environments, providing a foundation for comfort, productivity, and ergonomic support. These chairs are meticulously crafted to address the diverse needs of individuals engaged.in office tasks, meetings, and collaborative activities. The design and features of work chairs contribute significantly to the well-being and efficiency of users in various workplace settings. One paramount aspect of work chairs is their ergonomic design. Engineered to promote proper posture and reduce the risk of musculoskeletal strain, ergonomic features such as adjustable seat height, lumbar support, and customizable armrests are incorporated into these chairs.

Mr. Jeevanandam mentioned IS 17631 & IS 17632 covers the requirements of work chairs & general purpose chairs and stools. It extends its applicability to both completely manufactured/fabricated work chairs & general purpose chairs and stools. It also applies to ready-to-assemble units. This standard focuses on the specifications for work chairs, General purpose chairs and stools covering various aspects such as performance, safety, and durability. IS 17632 excludes reclining or tilting chairs, settees, rocking chairs, and multiple seating configurations. However, it does not include assessments for ageing, degradation, or the durability of stuffing materials, upholstery fabrics, or foam cushions.

Mr. B J Gowtham,Scientist-D elaborated on IS 17631 & IS 17632 that it stands as a testament to India's commitment to upholding rigorous standards in the furniture industry, ensure the performance and safety of general-purpose chairs and stools & work chairs in diverse settings. It serves as a valuable resource for manufacturers, designers, and consumers alike, promoting a culture of excellence in the production and use of general-purpose chairs, stools and work chairs.

Around 40 Stakeholders on the subject matter attended the Programme.

Bureau of Indian Standards, the National Standards Body of India is a statutory body functioning under the aegis of Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. It operates various schemes like Product Certification (ISI mark), Management Systems Certification, Hall Marking of Gold and Silver Jewellery/Artefacts and Laboratory Services for the benefit of the industry and in turn aiming at consumer protection.
