“There is a rising prevalence of heart disease among individuals aged 35-50, particularly in urban centers like Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai. A sharp increase in premature heart disease and sudden cardiac deaths is being observed, especially in the 40-50 age group across the state,” heart experts of Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital said and added that stressful work environments, sedentary lifestyles, and unhealthy dietary habits are the key contributing factors.
The experts included Dr. N. Ganesan, Head of the Department & Senior Interventional Cardiologist, Dr. R. Sivakumar, Senior Interventional Cardiologist Dr. S. Selvamani, Senior Interventional Cardiologist Dr. M. Sampathkumar, Senior Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Jeyapandian, Senior Interventional Cardiologist, Dr. Thomas Xavier Paul Singh, Associate Consultant, Department of Cardiology, Dr. S. Kumar, HOD & Senior Consultant, Department of Cardiac Anaesthesiology, Dr. R.M. Krishnan, HOD & Senior Consultant, Department of Cardiothoracic Vascular Surgery, Dr. Rajan, Senior Consultant, Department of Cardiothoracic Vascular Surgery. Mr. Dileep Bernard from the Hospital was also present in this event.
While addressing the media on World Heart Day 2024, which falls on September 29, every year, they said the rising prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and tobacco use is exacerbating the situation, particularly in the younger population. “The incidence of cardiovascular diseases is growing rapidly across Tamil Nadu and the broader South Indian region due to lifestyle changes, high diabetes rates, and the early onset of hypertension.”
“To maintain long-term heart health in today’s fast-paced world, young adults must prioritise a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and effective stress management. A heart-healthy lifestyle includes consuming whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, while limiting processed foods, sugar, and alcohol. Regular exercise, stress management techniques like meditation and yoga, avoiding smoking, getting 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night, staying hydrated, and regular health check-ups are also essential,” they emphasised.
Among the important health checkups include blood pressure checks, cholesterol level assessments, blood sugar tests, BMI measurements, ECGs, and cardiac stress tests. “These screenings are vital for early detection, timely intervention, and improved health outcomes,” they noted.
On the health burden of heart diseases, they pointed out that globally, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) account for 20 million deaths annually, representing 32% of all deaths. In India, 2.5 million lives are lost to CVD each year, accounting for 28-30% of the nation’s total deaths. Tamil Nadu alone sees an estimated 1.5-2 lakh new CVD cases annually, with over 5 million individuals currently living with heart conditions. Despite increasing awareness and advancements in healthcare, both urban and rural populations continue to face significant challenges,” they noted.
The experts team also highlighted new advancements in cardiovascular disease treatment, including innovative medications such as PCSK9 inhibitors, personalized therapies, and minimally invasive techniques like laser-assisted angioplasty and enhanced drug-eluting stents. These approaches have significantly improved patient outcomes, allowing for quicker recovery and reduced complications. “Technologies like robotic-assisted surgery and advanced imaging tools, including 3D imaging and augmented reality, enable more precise interventions and tailored treatment plans. Wearable devices and telemedicine have also revolutionised heart disease monitoring and management, offering greater accessibility to care.”
In conjunction with World Heart Day, Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital has launched several initiatives to promote heart health awareness. These include the Meenakshi Heart Walk – 7 Days 7K Challenge, where participants are encouraged to walk 7,000 steps daily for seven consecutive days. Ten randomly selected participants who complete the challenge will receive prize coupons. The hospital will also organize walkathons, distributing t-shirts, medals, and certificates to participants.
Upcoming activities include Walkers Club events at two locations in Madurai, influencer promotions, apartment-based engagement programs, and corporate outreach over the next 15 days, all aimed at fostering greater awareness of heart health.
