Union Minister Shri Manohar Lal reviews the progress of power sector projects in Tamil Nadu

The Union Minister for Power, Housing and Urban Development, Shri Manohar Lal chaired a meeting in Chennai yesterday to review the progress of power projects in the power sector in Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu Minister for Electricity, Prohibition and Excise Shri. V. Senthil Balaji and officials of the department were also present.


The Ministers discussed in detail the ongoing thermal power projects in Tamil Nadu such as 800 MW North Chennai Thermal Power Project-III (Stage-III), 2x660 MW Udangudi Thermal Power Project (Stage-I), 2x660 MW Ennore SEZ Thermal Power Project and 600 MW Ennore Expansion Thermal Power Project.


The meeting also discussed the various ongoing works under the Improved Power Distribution Scheme to reduce losses at a cost of Rs.8,932 crore. The Ministers directed the Central and State officials to take all necessary steps to expedite the completion of these works.


The review meeting was attended by Dr. Beela Venkatesan, Principal Secretary, Energy Department, Tamil Nadu, Shri K. Nandakumar, Chairman and Managing Director, TANGEDCO and senior officials of the Central and State Governments.


Addressing the Media after the review meeting, Union Minister Shri Manohar Lal said that he has visited Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Puducherry and Tamil Nadu over the last two days. He said that there is no shortage of power in Tamil Nadu and the state is implementing power projects effectively. He asked the State Government to increase the number of beneficiaries under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana and ensure that they get free electricity.


The Minister said that the Union Government is undertaking various schemes to increase the use of renewable energy sources by reducing dependence on fossil energy.
