In order to create awareness about Type 1 Diabetes, Rotary E-Club of Metro Dynamix and Idhayangal Charitable Trust, Coimbatore came together to conduct 'KID-A-THON 2024', a walkathon on 17th November at Race Course, Coimbatore.
Idhayangal Charitable Trust founded by renowned endocrinologist Dr.Krishnan Swaminathan is focused on improving lives of poor kids with Type 1 diabetes also called as Juvenile Diabetes, by providing them the needed high-quality insulin, glucose monitoring device etc. With the support from various benefactors including corporates, the Trust is supporting 2000+ such kids in Tamil Nadu.
This KID-A-THON event in Coimbatore was held as a fun activity for kids, a Type 1 diabetes awareness program for society and a fundraiser to support kids with this disease.
Flagged off by Coimbatore City Police Commissioner, V.Balakrishnan IPS, this event had a strong participation from 1500+ school kids from Coimbatore and another 250 kids with Type 1 Diabetes who are supported by Idhayangal Charitable Trust.
Adv. Sundaravadivelu, District Governor, Rotary International District 3201 attended; Combat Diabetes Project Director Rtn. Reshma Ramesh, KID-A-THON Chairman Sujay Shroff organised this event. All participants were provided medals, free goody bag with snacks, buttermilk, sugarfree drink and breakfast.
Speaking about Type 1 Diabetes' impact, Dr.Krishnan Swaminathan said that in Tamil Nadu, nearly 20,000 kids between the age of 6 months to 18 years have this disease. They need to take insulin 4 times a day for a lifetime. Even if they fail to take insulin for a day, they have the risk of going into a coma.
What's positive is that if they manage this disease properly, they can avoid all risks and live a normal life.
He added that Idhayangal Charitable Trust is supporting 2300 kids with this disease and it is providing high quality insulin, glucose monitoring device, insulin pump, to these kids, and is committed to do this for a lifetime.
With the support from Rotary E Club of Metro Dynamix, the Trust has received Rs.1.5 crore+ worth of aid in the last 3 years. This support has given hope to thousands of kids with Type 1 diabetes.
