Bureau of Indian Standards, the National Standards Body of India is a statutory body functioning under the aegis of Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. It operates various schemes like Product Certification (ISI mark), Management Systems Certification, Hall Marking of Gold and Silver Jewellery/Artefacts and Laboratory Services for the benefit of the industry and in turn aiming at consumer protection.
Bureau of Indian Standards, Chennai Branch Office in Coordination with Habitat for Humanity International organized a workshop titled “Unlocking Potential: The Role of Construction Chemicals in Affordable Housing” at Hotel Taj Wellington Mews in Chennai on 22.11.24.
The programme commenced with a Welcome Address by Shri Deepak Viswanathan, Senior Technical Advisor, Terwilliger Center for Innovation in Shelter, Habitat for Humanity International, who highlighted the importance of sustainable housing and the critical role of construction chemicals in achieving this vision.
Shri D. Jeevanandam, Scientist-D/Joint Director, BIS Chennai Branch Office, delivered a special address and emphasized the critical role of BIS in driving quality assurance for affordable housing. He also highlighted how construction chemicals can improve durability and climate resilience in the housing sector. This was followed by a Special Address by Shri Kartheck Pandiyan, General Secretary, Construction Chemicals Manufacturers Association, who highlighted the pivotal role of the industry in advancing innovation and fostering collaboration among stakeholders to achieve resilient housing solutions.
Shri Arun Pucchakayala, Scientist-D/Joint Director, BIS Chennai Branch Office, who provided insights into BIS technical standards and the impact of innovative research.
Presentations were conducted by Shri Ashwin Rao, Manager - MEAL, Terwilliger Center for Innovation in Shelter. A panel discussion moderated by Shri Varun Pujari, Senior Specialist - Market Systems, Habitat for Humanity International, included panelists from prominent industry leaders, provided a platform for engaging with experts. From Habitat for Humanity International, Shri Deepak Viswanathan, Senior Technical Advisor, and Shri Prasanna Sriraman, Manager - Market Systems, addressed participants during the interactive sessions. Around 60 stakeholders from various parts of Tamilnadu attended the programme.
