A 30-year-old man found permanent relief from years of drug-resistant epilepsy after undergoing an advanced surgical procedure at Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital. The procedure, known as ‘temporal lobectomy with amygdalo-hippocampectomy’, which is rarely performed in South Tamil Nadu, removed the brain tissue responsible for his seizures.

The patient, who previously experienced multiple seizures each week, has been seizure-free since the surgery three months ago and is now leading a normal, active life. He will need to continue taking anti-epileptic drugs for a year but may not require any medication afterwards.

The three-hour surgery, involving the removal of the temporal lobes, amygdala, and hippocampus, was performed by a skilled neurosurgical team consisting of senior consultants Dr. Vijay Anand, Senior Consultant and HOD - Department of Neurology, Dr. Narendiran, Senior Consultant- Department of Neurology, Dr. Selvamuthukumaran, Senior Consultant and HOD - Department of Neurosurgeryand Dr. K. Senthil Kumar, Senior Consultant- Department of Neurosurgery.

Addressing a press conference, Dr.Narendiran, Senior Consultant- Department of Neurology, explained that the patient’s quality of life had been severely impacted due to frequent seizures, occurring multiple times a week. These sudden episodes, which caused him to lose awareness of his surroundings, led to several accidents, making his life highly risky. Despite being on medication, the seizures persisted. “We used advanced diagnostic technologies, including 3T MRI, PET CT, and Video EEG, to precisely identify the source of the epilepsy. We then performed an open brain surgery to remove the affected areas-the temporal lobes, amygdala, and hippocampus-without impacting other brain structures. The patient recovered quickly and has been seizure-free since. While he will need to continue anti-epileptic medication for a year, there is a strong possibility that he will be able to stop taking medication afterward.”

He added that resection and curative surgeries, such as temporal lobectomy with amygdalo-hippocampectomy, have proven to be a boon for patients with partial epilepsy, where seizures originate from a specific part of the brain and do not respond to medication. Technologies like Video EEG enable doctors to accurately pinpoint the affected brain regions. These advanced surgical procedures do not require incisions into brain tissue; instead, surgeons can access the affected areas through existing gaps in the brain, removing the damaged tissue with precision. Post surgery, about 85% of patients will not require medication after the affected areas are removed, and the rest can still lead normal, active lives with medication.

Mr. Dilip from the hospital was also present at this press conference. Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital is one of the few institutions in Tamil Nadu equipped with advanced neuroscience technology and expert teams specialising in epilepsy surgery.
