BIS Conducts two days Artisans Training Program at Tiruchirapalli

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Chennai conducted a two day Artisan Training Program on 5 & 6 March 2025 at Sri Kaalikaparameswari (A) Sri Kamatchiamman Vageira Devasthanam, 40A, Periyakammalath Street, Tiruchirapalli – 620008. The training program was attended by 56 Artisans from jewellery making industries. 


Shri S. D. Dayanand, Senior Director and Head, BIS, Madurai presented the welcome address and the program objectives. He informed that this program will assist the Artisans of the jewellery making industries in selecting the right quality of metals that has to be alloyed with gold metal to achieve the declared purity. Shri S. Rajendran, President, Artisan Association, Trichy presented the keynote address. Smt. Hemalatha Panicker, Joint Director, BIS, Madurai presented an introduction of BIS Hallmarking scheme, the procedure for hallmarking registration and the policy for granting Registration to Jewellers. The provisions of BIS Act and Regulations on Hallmarking were explained to the audience. She also pointed out that the Jeweller registration process has been made easy by making it automated and online.


Shri Thirupathi Rajan, CMD, Goldsmith Academy Pvt Ltd, Madurai explained about the process of refining of gold and demonstrated the process physically to all participants. He informed that this refining process will help the artisans in making gold jewellery confirming to declared purity.


An in-depth presentation on the Indian Standards on Gold alloy making, solders, silver and alloys was presented by Shri R.Tirumala Rao, Director and Regional Hallmarking Coordinator, Southern Region, BIS, Chennai. He also explained the comparison of Indian and International Standards for Global trade. The program was concluded by distribution of certificates to the artisans.


After the presentation, an open house discussion was held, and queries regarding the refining process, gold alloying process, operation of Hallmarking Registration scheme.
