Bureau of Indian Standards, Chennai Branch Office is conducting Two Days Mentor Reinforcement Training Programme on "Learning Science via Standards" at Turyaa Chennai on 12 & 13 June 2025 for Science Teachers who are currently mentoring Standards Clubs in the districts of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu.
Shri Gowththam B.J., Scientist–D / Joint Director, welcomed the participants and explained the objectives of the programme. He stated that “Learning Science via Standards” is a BIS initiative aimed at strengthening students’ scientific understanding by linking core science concepts with quality and standardization practices. Through specially designed Lesson Plans, BIS demonstrates how scientific principles operate in everyday products, thereby reinforcing classroom learning in a practical and relatable manner. A key component of the programme includes interactive sessions on 4 to 5 BIS Lesson Plans that illustrate the application of science through real-world examples. Highlighting a new initiative, he mentioned that BIS has introduced a monthly national-level quiz competition, exclusively for students enrolled in Standards Clubs.
In her inaugural address, Smt. G. Bhavani, Scientist-F / Senior Director & Head (Chennai Branch Office), underlined the role of BIS in formulating national standards and encouraging their adoption across sectors. She emphasized the importance of academic institutions in this mission, noting that equipping students with knowledge about quality and standards prepares them to become future contributors to the nation's quality ecosystem. She highlighted that BIS’s most impactful academic initiative—the creation of Standards Clubs—offers school and college students a platform to learn about standards through participatory learning, competitions, and project-based activities. These clubs encourage curiosity and critical thinking around quality and compliance in everyday contexts.
As part of this broader engagement strategy, she announced the launch of a National Level Online Quiz Competition for Standards Club members. Scheduled every fourth Saturday, the quiz serves as a knowledge-enhancement tool and a means to foster healthy competition among students nationwide. During the training, teachers are being briefed on how to manage club details through the portal and implement upcoming Standards Club initiatives, all aimed at cultivating an enduring awareness of standards among the younger generation.
The various training sessions during the two-day programme are conducted by Shri Gowththam B.J., Scientist–D, along with the Resource Support Team. The sessions covered an overview of BIS’s core activities—standardization, certification, testing, training, and academic outreach. The programme featured BIS Lesson Plans that link science with real-life applications and highlighted a new initiative: a monthly national-level quiz exclusively for Standards Club students.
Totally 70 Science Teachers attended the Training Programme. The Programme will end on 13 June 2025 evening.
