BIS Conducts Capsule Course on National Building Code of India 2016 in Hyderabad

The country is on the path of rapid urbanization and development. Considering the importance of the National Building Code of India (NBC) 2016 in ensuring quality and safety of the buildings and related infrastructure, it is important that various stakeholders contributing to building planning, design, construction and operation and maintenance are well aware of the provisions of NBC 2016 for judicious implementation of the provisions and intent of the Code. Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), being the National Standards Body of the country, through its training arm, the National Institute of Training for Standardization (NITS) has designed the short-term Capsule Courses on NBC 2016 for national capacity building. In this regard, a three-day Capsule Course on National Building Code of India 2016 - Structural Design was held at the Hyderabad Branch Office of BIS, in coordination with the Civil Engineering Department, BIS, from 28 August 2025 to 30 August 2025.

 

The course was designed to enhance professional understanding of NBC 2016, which lays down essential provisions for structural safety, sustainability, and quality in construction practices. The course was attended by 36 delegates from the Industry, PSUs, Govt. Organizations as well as Research Scholars from different educational institutes and many other Private and Public Sector consultancy firms across the nation, reflecting the growing recognition of Indian Standards in ensuring safe and resilient infrastructure.


The first day began with the inauguration of the programme featuring a keynote address by Shri P.V. Srikanth, Director & Head, BIS Hyderabad Branch Office. He emphasized that the National Building Code of India 2016 (NBC 2016) is a prestigious publication of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) which is widely used by the various stakeholders, such as building regulatory departments, government construction departments, builders/developers, etc. and is intended to help regulate and guide the building construction activity in the whole of the country, particularly the municipal corporations, municipalities, development authorities and other local bodies, public works departments and other construction departments and agencies dealing with land development and building construction. 


Shri Abhishek, Joint Director, BIS, delivered an introductory session on NBC 2016, explaining its framework, chapters, key provisions, and structural load considerations.


Shri Gohul Deepak, Executive Director, Glazing Society of India took technical session on Glass and Glazing, covering selection methodology, safety, fire considerations, and energy efficiency.


Shri Aman Deep, Managing Director, Creative Design Consultants and Engineers Pvt. Ltd., gave technical presentation on Masonry and Plain, Reinforced, and Prestressed Concrete, including earthquake-resistant design and case studies.


On the second day, Shri Aman Deep delivered a detailed presentation on Concrete Technology, covering durability, mix design, concreting under special conditions, and quality control. He also discussed Construction Defects and their adverse effects on structural safety.


Shri Amitava Sil, Scientist ‘E’ & Head (Kolkata Field Station), ICFRE – Institute of Wood Science and Technology, highlighted the use of Timber and Bamboo in structural applications.


Shri Amit Barde, Head – Precast Initiative, L&T ECC, Chennai, explained the scope and applications of Prefabricated Concrete in modern construction.


On the third day, Dr. Padmaja Gokaraju, Vice President – Designs, Kirby Building Systems & Structures India Pvt. Ltd., delivered an expert technical session on Steel Design, supported with practical case studies and examples.


Dr. Jaykumar Shukla, Principal Engineer & Senior Consultant, Geo Dynamics Engineers LLP, provided detailed insights on Soil and Foundation Engineering, emphasizing subsurface investigations and design principles.


An Open Discussion and Clarification Session was conducted by Shri Arun Kumar, Head, NBC Cell, Civil Engineering Department, BIS, who addressed technical queries and reinforced the practical applications of NBC 2016.


The programme concluded with the distribution of participation certificates, marking the successful completion of the training.


The capsule course received wide appreciation from participants, who valued the blend of theoretical knowledge, technical depth, and practical case studies shared by eminent speakers.
