SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Kattankulathur, successfully hosted the 9th edition of SRM RUN as part of its national-level Techno-Management fest, Aaruush ’25.
The event, centred on the theme “Run for Zero Waste”, brought together students, faculty, alumni, and community members in a collective effort to promote sustainable living. From a total of 5,190 registrations, over 2,600 participants engaged in the event. Many faculty members and their children also participated in the run, with children taking part in the 700-metre Junior Race. All waste generated during the run was systematically collected and sent to the Material Segregation Unit, SRMIST, for responsible recycling, underscoring the institute's dedication to comprehensive sustainability.
Aaruush, incepted in 2007 by the late Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, has continually served as a platform for innovation and social responsibility. SRM RUN, first introduced during the 11th edition, has since evolved into a flagship initiative inspiring participants to embrace sustainability, inclusivity, and mindful decision-making.
This year’s run witnessed enthusiastic participation across two categories:
• 700-metre Junior Race, encouraging children to build fitness habits and environmental awareness from an early age.
• 5.03-kilometre Main Race, where participants from diverse age groups united to support the cause of zero waste.
The event was graced by Chief Guest Mr. Vignesh Hariharan, South India’s first World Kettlebell Champion, R. Parameshwara Govind, Sathiya Guru P along with Ms. G. Gopika and Ms. M. Akshaya accomplished sports personalities and proud representatives of SRMIST. Their presence inspired participants to embody the spirit of responsibility, inclusivity, and sustainable living.
SRM RUN 9.0 was made possible with the generous support of Parlé Agro, whose association highlighted the importance of academia-industry collaboration in driving sustainable initiatives.
Reflecting on the success of the event, Dr. C. Muthamizhchelvan, Vice Chancellor, SRMIST, reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to combining innovation with social awareness. Dr. S. Ponnusamy, Registrar, SRMIST, and Dr. Leenus Jesu Martin, Dean, College of Engineering & Technology, lauded the participants and organizers for making SRM RUN 9.0 a meaningful and impactful endeavour.
The marathon not only promoted physical well-being but also instilled a deeper sense of community, perseverance, and environmental consciousness. Through SRM RUN 9.0, Aaruush ’25 once again underlined its mission to inspire sustainable choices and collective responsibility towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Waste.
