BIS Inaugurates BIS Corner and Students’ Chapter at NIT Trichy

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India functioning under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India, initiated by its Coimbatore Branch Office, inaugurated the BIS Corner and the BIS Students’ Chapter at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Tiruchirappalli today. The occasion was presided over by Shri Pramod Kumar Tiwari, IAS, Director General, BIS, with the participation of senior officials from BIS and NIT Tiruchirappalli.


The BIS Corner, established in the Central Library of NIT Trichy, will serve as a hub for information and engagement with standards. It will provide access to Indian Standards, handbooks, and technical literature, enabling students and faculty to familiarise themselves with the frameworks that underpin quality, interoperability, and safety. Alongside, the BIS Students’ Chapter will function as a dynamic platform for faculty mentors and students to collaborate with BIS through exposure visits, hands-on projects, research activities and interactions with industry experts, thereby linking classroom learning with the practical quality ecosystem.


The Inauguration of Student Chapters was conducted at Barn Hall, NIT, Trichy on 11.09.2025. The inauguration ceremony initiated with a welcome address by Dr K Muthukumaran, BIS Chair Professor, NIT, Trichy. Smt. G. Bhavani, Scientist-F / Senior Director & Head, BIS Coimbatore, presented the Programme Objectives and remarked that the BIS Corner would make technical resources and reference material available on campus, while the Students’ Chapter would provide structured opportunities for students to engage with real-world standardisation challenges. 


Dr. Meenakshi Ganesan, Scientist-G and Deputy Director General, South, BIS delivered the keynote address and  emphasised that the Students’ Chapter would act as a bridge between academia and the standardisation community.


Dr. G. Aghila, Director, NIT Tiruchirappalli presented the Presidential address and expressed that partnering with BIS would enrich academic pursuits at NIT.


The Chief Guest, Shri Pramod Kumar Tiwari, IAS, Director General, BIS, presented the Inaugural address and underlined the importance of exposing young engineers to the world of standards. He noted that standards are the invisible foundations that ensure trust, competitiveness and safety in products and processes across sectors. He urged students and faculty at NIT Trichy to actively participate in Technical Committees, contribute to research in standardisation, and translate their innovations into globally accepted solutions aligned with Indian Standards. 


The collaboration between BIS and NIT Trichy is guided by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed earlier on 22 November 2022. NIT Trichy has created 14 Student Chapters within various departments like Civil Engineering, Computer Applications, Computer Science and Engineering, Energy and environment, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Instrumentation and Control Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, etc. Shri Pramod Kumar Tiwari, IAS, Director General, BIS inaugurated these student chapters by felicitating the mentors of Student Chapters with a Memento. 


Competitions like Quiz, memes and reel making were conducted for the students of BIS Student Chapters. Winners were rewarded with Cash prizes and certificates. Open House Discussion was conducted where Shri Pramod Kumar Tiwari, IAS, Director General, BIS interacted with the students and faculty members, who were also members of Standards Formulation Technical Committees. Closing Remarks was presented by Dr S.A Senthil Kumar, Registrar, NIT, Trichy. The programme ended with a vote of thanks by Shri V. Ramesh, Director, BIS Coimbatore.
