Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India functioning under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India, is engaged in formulation of standards, product and system certification, hallmarking and laboratory testing services to support industry and safeguard consumer interests.
As part of its bi-monthly Capsule Course initiative, BIS Chennai Branch Office (CNBO) organised a two-day training programme on Safety of Electrical Appliances as per IS 302 (Part 1) on 25 & 26 September 2025 at BIS Southern Regional Office, Chennai, for Quality Control Personnel from the industry.
The programme was attended by 21 quality control personnel from the industry. The objective of the training was to enhance the knowledge of participants regarding the requirements and testing methods under IS 302 (Part 1), thereby strengthening industry’s capability to ensure safety compliance of electrical appliances.
The technical sessions were conducted by Shri Sreejith Mohan, Scientist-D, CNBO, who explained in detail the requirements of the Standard, including the Product Manual and Standard Implementation Tool (SIT). The sessions also included group exercises and workshops designed to ensure that the participants clearly understood the provisions of the standard and its application in the industry.
On the second day, the participants were taken for a visit to BIS Southern Regional Laboratory (SRL), Chennai, where Shri Dhinesh Rajagopalan L, Scientist-D, along with the laboratory testing personnel, demonstrated various testing methodologies as per IS 302 (Part 1). This hands-on exposure enabled the participants to directly observe and understand the testing procedures mandated under the standard.
The programme concluded with an interactive session with the participants, during which they shared their feedback and expressed appreciation for the practical approach adopted in the training. Certificates were distributed to the quality control personnel by senior officers of BIS. The course was well received and acknowledged as highly beneficial in enhancing industry awareness and compliance with Indian Standards.
