Tata Power, through its skilling arm Tata Power Skill Development Institute (TPSDI), has expanded its green skilling footprint in Tamil Nadu by inaugurating two Solar Skill Centres of Excellence (SCoE) at Pettai (Tirunelveli) and Sattur (Virudhunagar). Set up under a Public–Private Partnership with the Directorate of Employment & Training (DET), Government of Tamil Nadu, the centres will build a steady pipeline of certified talent for the state’s rapidly growing renewable ecosystem – anchored by Tata Power’s 4.3 GW, single-location solar cell and module manufacturing plant in Tirunelveli. Tata Power extends its sincere appreciation to the Government of Tamil Nadu for their support and partnership in establishing these centres, which play a vital role in advancing green skill development and sustainable livelihoods in the state. By skilling in sustainable and future-ready energy domains, the initiative advances both India’s Green Energy vision and Tamil Nadu’s leadership in clean-tech jobs.
The facilities were jointly inaugurated by Dr. R. Sukumar, IAS, District Collector, Tirunelveli, and Mr. Parthasarathy Balaji, CEO – TP Solar, in the presence of Smt. K. Karpagam, Regional Joint Director (Training), Ms. Anupama Ratta, Chief – HR & ES&A (Renewables), and Mr. Alok Prasad, Head – TPSDI. These new centres will strengthen an integrated ecosystem from skilling to deployment – supporting project execution across Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states, and preparing a locally trained workforce equipped for jobs in rooftop and utility-scale solar, and O&M.
Both centres will deliver practical, industry-aligned courses in renewable energy technologies, including solar installation and maintenance, energy efficiency, and electrical safety, with clear role pathways for installers and technicians, supervisors, and vendor-entrepreneurs. Programmes are aligned to NCVET/NSDC standards and offered under MNRE’s PM: Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, with nationally recognised certifications that enable faster placement with EPCs, channel partners and retailers – including opportunities across Tata Power’s manufacturing, project, and O&M value chains. Participants will receive nationally recognised certifications, enhancing their employability and enabling them to contribute actively in India’s green energy transition.
Since inception, TPSDI has evolved into an institute of excellence for the energy sector, offering 200+ modular courses across green energy, power systems, transmission and distribution, safety and soft skills. It has trained over 3.75 lakh individuals, delivering 1.5 million+ person-days of instruction, including 50,000+ beneficiaries from Affirmative Action groups and 18,000+ women. With the Pettai and Sattur centres now tied to a large-scale solar manufacturing hub in the state, Tata Power is creating a local talent engine that serves factory floors, project sites and service networks—strengthening supply chains and accelerating rooftop adoption under PM Surya Ghar.
Tamil Nadu now has the full arc-Tata Power’s world-class 4.3 GW solar cell and module manufacturing in Tirunelveli, strong project demand, and dedicated green skilling centres under a PPP model. The inauguration underscores Tata Power’s commitment to a self-reliant clean-energy ecosystem in Tamil Nadu, where Make-in-India manufacturing, local skilling, and rapid deployment move in step to deliver green growth at scale.
