The “Uyir Kaavalan” Road Safety Pledge was organized at the Agricultural Engineering College and Research Institute (AEC & RI), Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, to promote awareness on safe and responsible road use among students and faculty members. The event was conducted as part of the “Naan Uyir Kaavalan” campaign — a joint initiative of the Coimbatore District Administration, Coimbatore City Police, and the non-governmental organization Uyir, inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru. M.K. Stalin.

Under the leadership of Thiru. Pavankumar G. Giriyappavanar, I.A.S., District Collector, Coimbatore, more than 500 students and faculty members of AEC & RI took the Uyir Kaavalan Road Safety Pledge, reaffirming their commitment to follow traffic rules and promote a culture of safety on roads.

Addressing the gathering, the District Collector stated that the campaign aims to reach 10 lakh participants across the district, of which around 6 lakh people have already taken the pledge. He emphasized that Coimbatore continues to record a high number of road accidents, particularly involving young and new drivers, and appreciated the students for taking pride in joining this meaningful initiative.

Dr. R. Thamizh Vendan, Registrar and Acting Vice-Chancellor of TNAU, and Dr. A. Raviraj, Dean (Engineering), presided over the event. Participants collectively pledged to uphold road safety measures — including wearing helmets and seatbelts, avoiding mobile phone usage while driving, obeying traffic rules, and encouraging others to act responsibly on the road.

The event highlighted the importance of youth participation in creating a safer society and reinforced the message that every life on the road is precious.
