Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India functioning under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India, organised a Manak Manthan—a stakeholder discussion on the Draft Indian Standard “Wrought Copper Tubes for Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Purposes – Specification (Second Revision of IS 10773)”. The programme was held at the Thirumudivakkam Industrial Estate Manufacturers Association (TIEMA), Chennai.
Programme Objectives for the event were laid by Shri S. D. Dayanand, Scientist–F / Senior Director & Head, BIS Chennai Branch Office, highlighting the importance of having inputs of industries from the Districts of Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram on Indian Standards pertinent to automotive component manufacturing for air-conditioning as well as appliances manufacturing for air conditioning and refrigeration industry. He emphasised that stakeholder participation is essential in developing standards that meet consumer needs while ensuring safety, performance and sustainability.
Shri Arun Ponnuswamy, President, Thirumudivakkam Industrial Estate Manufacturers Association (TIEMA), Chennai delivered Keynote Address, appreciating the efforts of BIS in engaging with industry as key stakeholders and emphasised the importance of quality standards in enhancing the competitiveness of Indian manufacturers. He highlighted the need for consistent product quality and adherence to standards to promote reliability, trust, and market expansion both domestically and internationally.
Shri V. S. Venkatesan, Joint Director / General Manager, District Industries Centre, Kancheepuram, delivered Presidential Address, lauding the proactive efforts of BIS in organising dialogue with stakeholders on developing standards on products which have significant impact on trade from the perspective of energy efficiency and environmental challenges. He underscored the significance of copper tube standards in ensuring energy efficiency, safety, and reliability in refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, which play a crucial role in both industrial and domestic applications.
On the occasion of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day), observed on 31st October 2025, Shri S. D. Dayanand, Scientist–F / Senior Director & Head, BIS Chennai Branch Office, administered the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas Pledge to all participants, reaffirming the commitment to national unity and integrity.
Following this, Shri Gowththam B. J, Scientist–D / Joint Director, BIS Chennai Branch Office, conducted a session on “BIS and e-BIS”, highlighting the various online services offered by BIS for certification, hallmarking, and standardization. He encouraged industries to utilize the e-BIS platform for seamless registration, compliance, and monitoring of standards.
A Technical Discussion on the draft document for revision of IS 10773 WROUGHT COPPER TUBES FOR REFRIGERATION AND AIR-CONDITIONING PURPOSES was conducted by Shri Arun Pucchakayala, Scientist–E / Director, BIS Chennai Branch Office, providing in-depth insights into the proposed changes through the draft standard and plausible impact on the industry.
An Open House session followed, where participants actively engaged with BIS officials, providing valuable inputs and suggestions on the draft standard. Discussions focused on aspects of quality enhancement, sustainable manufacturing practices, and the scope for improving export potential through harmonized standards.
Manak Manthan witnessed active participation from manufacturers, industry associations, testing laboratories, academia, and stakeholders from the copper tube manufacturing, HVAC and allied sectors.
Through such initiatives, BIS continues to strengthen its mission of fostering collaboration between industries and the standardization process, ensuring that Indian Standards remain globally relevant, technologically robust, and beneficial to both producers and consumers.
