BIS Organises ‘Standards Carnival’ at SKCET, Coimbatore

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India, organized the ‘Standards Carnival’ and inaugurated 14 BIS Standards Clubs at Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology (SKCET), Coimbatore, in collaboration with Sri Krishna Institutions. The event aimed to create awareness on quality, safety, and standardization among students and industry stakeholders. The inaugural programme was held at Sri Krishna Hall, SKCET, and was graced by Shri Jayakumar Ramdass, Joint Managing Director, Mahendra Pumps Pvt. Ltd; Smt. G. Bhavani, Scientist-F / Senior Director and Head; Shri. G. Vinith Kumar, Scientist-E, Director; Shri. A. Arivazhagan, Scientist-D, Joint Director from BIS Coimbatore; Dr. K. Sundararaman, Chief Executive Officer; and Dr. K. Porkumaran, Principal, SKCET.


The Standards Carnival featured an industry expo where 25 BIS Stakeholders including Licencess, testing laboratories and Govt. Institutions participated and displayed their products. It also included student exhibitions, cultural programmes, panel discussions, and prize distribution, providing an interactive platform to highlight the importance of Indian Standards in industry, innovation, and consumer safety.


The formal session began with a welcome address by Dr. K. Porkumaran, Principal, SKCET, who highlighted the importance of standards education in shaping responsible engineers and industry-ready professionals. Addressing the gathering, Smt. G. Bhavani, Scientist-F / Senior Director and Head emphasized that BIS Standards Clubs play a vital role in engaging students with standardization, quality assurance, and conformity assessment, thereby preparing them for industry and research challenges. She also highlighted the importance of adopting Indian Standards to strengthen product reliability and global competitiveness.


In his presidential address, Dr. K. Sundararaman, CEO, Sri Krishna Institutions, stated that the collaboration with BIS reflects Sri Krishna Institutions’ commitment to nurturing a culture of quality, innovation, and responsible engineering education. Shri Jayakumar Ramdass shared industry perspectives on how standards contribute to sustainable growth and consumer trust. The programme concluded with felicitation of industries, prize distribution to students, and a vote of thanks by Dr. Srividya, Professor and Head, SKCET. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, faculty members, and industry representatives, marking a significant step towards strengthening quality consciousness among future professionals
