Usha International, one of India’s leading consumer durables brands, reaffirmed its commitment to preserving indigenous Indian sports by supporting an Atya Patya event held at Carmel Higher Secondary School, Nagercoil, in Kanyakumari district. The event, conducted on December 28, 2025, brought together over 200 participants and highlighted one of India’s oldest traditional team sports.
Organised in partnership with the Lemuria Varmakalari Adimurai World Organization and local village sports clubs, the event witnessed participation from youth teams and traditional sports practitioners. Senior members of the Lemuria Varmakalari Adimurai World Organization, along with local government and panchayat representatives, community leaders and sports practitioners, were present.
The event was graced by chief guests Mrs. Rathipriya, International Coach – Meipadam and World Record Holder in Karlakattai (2023), and Adv. P. Issac Samraj, Chairman, Kanyakumari District Boxing Club, who encouraged young players and spoke about the importance of preserving traditional sporting practices.
Atya Patya, deeply rooted in India’s rural sporting heritage, has been played for centuries and finds mention in ancient Tamil literature as Klithatu. The sport is known across Tamil Nadu by regional names such as Thatukodu, Thanikodu, Uppukodu and Uppupattai, reflecting its strong cultural significance.
Matches were conducted in Under 14 and Above 14 categories for both boys and girls, following the traditional two-team format with nine players per team. Games were played across nine trenches and one central trench, with points awarded for each successful crossing. Winners included teams from Kottaram, Kadiyapattinam, Mulanginavilai and Periyakadu across different categories.
Commenting on the initiative, Ms. Komal Mehra, Head – Sports Initiatives and Associations, Usha International, said that indigenous games like Atya Patya play an important role in promoting fitness, teamwork and discipline, while ensuring that youth engagement is channelled positively.
Mr. R. Selvan, Founder, Lemuria Varmakalari Adimurai World Organization, said the initiative helps reconnect younger generations with their cultural roots and ensures the continuity of traditional sports.
Usha continues to support a wide range of inclusive sporting initiatives across the country, with a focus on community participation and grassroots development.
