BIS Chennai Holds ‘MANAK SAMVAAD’ for New Licensees

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Chennai Branch Office, the National Standards Body of India under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India, organised the “MANAK SAMVAAD – Sensitization Meeting with New BIS Licensees” at the BIS Chennai Branch Office, C.I.T Campus, Taramani. Certificates were formally handed over to the new licensees across various sectors, whose BIS licences were conferred during the months of March and April 2026.


The programme commenced with the Welcome Address and Programme Objectives by S. D. Dayanand, Scientist-F / Senior Director & Head, BIS Chennai Branch Office, who welcomed the newly licensed manufacturers into the BIS ambit. He emphasised that Indian Standards form the backbone of product quality, safety and reliability, and highlighted the importance of strict compliance with the relevant Indian Standards and BIS licence conditions by manufacturers. He stated that consistent adherence to standards and conformity assessment requirements enhances consumer trust, strengthens the credibility of Indian products in domestic and global markets, and supports the vision of “Quality India”. He further informed that, since BIS provides third-party assurance, manufacturers should take utmost care on quality.


He further highlighted the enforcement activities being undertaken by BIS under the provisions of Section 28 of the BIS Act, 2016, against products stored, distributed or offered for sale without the mandatory BIS Standard Mark in cases where Quality Control Orders (QCOs) are in force. He informed that BIS regularly conducts search and seizure operations to curb the sale of non-compliant products and to safeguard consumer interests, thereby ensuring effective implementation of mandatory certification requirements across sectors.


Pakki Balu, Scientist-C / Deputy Director, and Hitesh Yadav, Scientist-C / Deputy Director, BIS Chennai Branch Office delivered the technical sessions. The sessions covered the operational aspects of BIS licence compliance, marking requirements and obligations of licence holders, besides highlighting the role of industries in promoting standardization, quality consciousness and consumer safety through wider adoption and dissemination of Indian Standards.


The new licensees were also apprised of the Management System Certifications offered by BIS, including IS/ISO 9001, IS/ISO 14001, IS/ISO 45001 and other such management systems. The session highlighted the significance of Management System Certifications in improving organisational efficiency, process standardisation and continual improvement. The fees for Management System Certifications have been reduced significantly, and the details are available on the BIS website, www.bis.gov.in


The programme also included distribution of Welcome Kits and an interactive Open House session, wherein participants interacted with BIS officials and clarified queries relating to certification, compliance and standardization activities. The programme concluded with the formal presentation of BIS certificates to representatives of 30 newly certified industries by  S. D. Dayanand, Scientist-F / Senior Director & Head, BIS Chennai Branch Office. The new licensees appreciated the guidance extended by BIS officials and expressed satisfaction on receiving the BIS licence.
