The 12th International Day of Yoga was celebrated at the Dindigul District Sports Stadium under the leadership of Durga Moorthy, District Collector of Dindigul. The event was attended by R. Sachithanantham, Member of Parliament for Dindigul, and Ilamathi Jothiprakash, Mayor of Dindigul Corporation.

Addressing the gathering, the District Collector described yoga as one of humanity’s most valuable gifts, emphasizing that it promotes harmony between the body, mind, and spirit while providing a holistic approach to health and well-being. She noted that yoga continues to be an effective means of improving physical fitness, mental strength, emotional balance, and inner wellness.

Referring to this year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” she highlighted that regular yoga practice can help children, adolescents, senior citizens, women, and pregnant women protect themselves from various health conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, bronchial asthma, and mental health issues.

The Collector shared her personal experience, stating that she has been practicing yoga regularly since 2014. She described yoga as a way of life and encouraged everyone to dedicate at least 45 minutes each day to the practice, just as they allocate time for their daily activities.

She stressed that the benefits of yoga may not be immediately visible but become evident through consistent practice. Over time, yoga becomes a healthy habit that contributes significantly to physical and mental well-being. She also pointed out that maintaining good health is essential for achieving success in life and that yoga plays a vital role in preventing and addressing many physical ailments.

Encouraging young people to adopt yoga early in life, she said that regular practice can lead to a healthier and more active old age, reduce fatigue, improve mental happiness, and enhance overall productivity. She urged participants to spend less time on television, movies, and mobile phones and instead invest time in activities that promote long-term health and wellness.

Following the address, a mass yoga and breathing exercise session was conducted at the stadium, with participation from athletes, college and school students, and members of the public.

The District Collector later distributed certificates to participants who took part in the yoga programme.

Among those present were Dr. P. Sivakumar, District Siddha Medical Officer; S. Karunakaran, Additional Superintendent of Police; Dr. V. Deepa, Principal of GAN Yoga and Naturopathy Medical College; Dr. Amsalakshmi, Yoga Medical Officer, Chinnalapatti; along with students, sportspersons, and members of the public.
