Residents have appealed for the construction of a new Anganwadi Centre in Velangudi Panchayat, under Tirupathur Panchayat Union in Sivagangai district, replacing the existing centre where children are currently studying in unsafe conditions.

The Anganwadi Centre has been functioning in Velangudi Panchayat for over 30 years. More than 25 children currently attend the centre, which is now in a severely dilapidated state. The building has a cement (asbestos) sheet roof that absorbs excessive heat, causing considerable discomfort to children during the summer months.

Although many government offices have been modernized to meet present-day standards, villagers expressed disappointment that the asbestos roof of this Anganwadi Centre, used by young children, has not yet been replaced. In addition, the cooking area is located within the same building, exposing children to smoke and heat, which further affects their well-being.

In 2011, only the flooring of the building was renovated at a cost of ₹92,000. However, that portion has also deteriorated over time.

Considering the welfare and safety of the children, residents have submitted a petition to the district administration requesting the construction of a new concrete building for the Anganwadi Centre. They have also urged the concerned authorities to intervene immediately and take necessary steps to safeguard the children.
