Maruti Suzuki India Limited (“Maruti Suzuki”) has further strengthened its sustainable logistics network in Southern India by becoming the first passenger vehicle manufacturer to dispatch vehicles by rail to the Pollachi Railway Terminal in Tamil Nadu.
The inaugural rake, carrying 120 vehicles, including the Wagon R, Ertiga, Dzire and Celerio, was flagged off from the Company’s Manesar in-plant railway siding on 18 August 2026 and reached Pollachi earlier this week.
The Company collaborated with Indian Railways to operationalise the Pollachi terminal for automobile dispatches. The new rail destination, alongside Coimbatore, is expected to enhance Maruti Suzuki’s ability to efficiently serve customers across Southern India.
The development comes ahead of the Onam festive season in Kerala, when demand for automobiles typically sees increased activity. The terminal is expected to facilitate nearly 70 automobile rakes annually, supporting the movement of over 11,000 additional vehicles each year to the region through rail.
Maruti Suzuki adopted rail-based vehicle dispatches in FY 2014-15 as part of its efforts to reduce CO₂ emissions, fuel consumption and road congestion. Since then, the Company has steadily increased the contribution of rail in its outbound logistics, from 5% in FY 2014-15 to 26.5% in FY 2025-26. Cumulatively, more than 32 lakh vehicles have been dispatched through railways.
As part of its long-term sustainability roadmap, Maruti Suzuki aims to raise the share of rail-based outbound vehicle dispatches to 35% by FY 2030-31, further advancing its green logistics initiatives.
