Whirlpool Launches India’s First AI-Powered Freshness Detection Technology in Refrigerators

Whirlpool of India Limited, one of India’s leading home appliance manufacturers, has launched India’s First Freshness Detection Technology, powered by its proprietary 6th Sense AI, in its premium Luxuriem 4-Door refrigerator range. The Made-in-India innovation detects early signs of over-ripening in fruits and vegetables, helping reduce food wastage and making everyday food management easier for Indian households.

Powered by Whirlpool’s proprietary iFresh Sensor Engine and an iFresh Sensor built into the crisper drawer, the technology monitors ethylene, a naturally occurring gas released by fruits and vegetables as they age. The system scans produce every 10 seconds and alerts consumers when rising ethylene levels indicate possible over-ripening. Developed with food scientists, its Full-Spectrum Produce Detection is designed to recognise varying ethylene emissions across produce, including apples, pears, kiwis, avocados, peaches, lettuce, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower. The Real-Time UI Tracking interface displays freshness status, while adaptive AI learning uses consumer feedback to calibrate future alerts.

Commenting on the launch, Nakul Tewari, Vice President – Marketing, Whirlpool of India, said the technology addresses a key consumer challenge: fruits and vegetables often get forgotten in refrigerators and begin ripening unnoticed. By bringing intuitive intelligence to freshness, Whirlpool aims to help consumers manage produce more effectively. The expanded Luxuriem 4-Door refrigerator range will be available in 645L, 651L and 654L capacities, across premium finishes, with prices starting at ₹98,000 through leading retail stores and online platforms across India.
