Awareness about Bradycardia and the Role of Leadless Pacemakers

Bradycardia, a condition characterized by an abnormally low heart rate, necessitates increased awareness and understanding among the general public. A healthy heart typically beats between 60 to 100 times per minute, but individuals with bradycardia experience fewer than 60 beats per minute. This diminished heart rate may hinder the heart's ability to pump sufficient oxygenated blood during regular activities or exercise, leading to symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, shortness of breath, or fainting spells.

In cases where medical management proves insufficient, pacemakers are often prescribed to treat bradycardia.Dr. R.B. Vidhyakar, a distinguished Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist at PSG Multispecialty Hospital in Coimbatore, emphasizes the benefits of leadless pacemakers as an alternative to traditional pacemakers. According to him, “Unlike conventional pacemakers, leadless pacemakers do not require wires (leads) and a surgical pocket beneath the skin to deliver pacing therapy”.

A notable case is that of an octogenarian patient with multiple comorbidities who recently underwent a successful implantation of the world’s smallest FDA approved dual-chamber Leadless Pacemaker – Transcatheter Pacing System at PSG Multispecialty Hospital, Coimbatore. Dr. R.B. Vidhyakar, supported by the skilled Cardiology team at PSG Multispecialty Hospital, performed the implantation.
