On the directions of the Commissioner of Food Safety and Drug Administration and the directions of the District Collector, Erode, an awareness programme on recycling of used oil in restaurants and bakeries was held under the leadership of District Designated Officer Dr. Thanga Vignesh.
Speaking on the occasion, the Designated Officer said that the reuse of once used oil is harmful and may result in diseases like cancer. So the department is taking steps to recycle it properly and convert it into biodiesel without affecting the environment.
It is also our duty to ensure the public interest by handing over the oil once used in food manufacturers, restaurants and bakeries to the authorised agencies without reusing it. In Erode district alone, 81 tons of used cooking oil was received for recycling in the last financial year, he said. Prizes were also distributed by the department for their outstanding participation in the field of cooking oil recycling.
The volunteers who participated in the event wore T-shirts with awareness slogans and distributed handouts and stickers with awareness slogans. Erode District Hotel Association officials and Erode Corporation Food Safety Officer Selvan made arrangements for the event.
